Title: Anything but the Truth
It may be an odd thing to say, but this is a pretty fun album. I realize that description may sound a bit off the mark, but hear me out for a second. Here we have two guys, singer-songwriter Jarrod Gorbel and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Kamstra, who sound like they really had an enjoyable time putting this record together. Im speaking of the music, the energy, the heart and the passion that is embodied in their music. Each song on the record is slightly different from the next, ranging from melodic pop to alt-country. Gorbel knows how to use his voice, and it blends nicely with each style. And this is a good thing, because if each song were similar, his voice could easily make you run away after only a couple of tracks. My personal favorites on this album are the more folk and alt-country tinged tunes where I feel his voice is really in its element. Although I typically dislike screaming outbursts in songs, at least he does it the right way. At the end of Everything I Once Had, he gets himself so worked up that he just cant take it anymore and he lets loose. When I get to this point in the song, I can almost feel the anger and frustration welling up in my own throat. It is this raw emotion and energy that makes this a fun album. You can just tell he had fun with his voice and putting his poetic lyrics into music. Not to be mistaken, his lyrics certainly arent cheerful images of puppies and breakfast in bed. Visions of Elliot Smith and Wilco dance in my head. These guys recently passed through my area, and Im sad that I missed their live performance because I have a feeling it wouldve been a fun show. Theres that word again fun and I guess thats what I had with this album. I will be sure to keep an eye out for their next pass through the Northwest as well as any future albums.
