Various Artists: We Ain't Housewife Material
[Dionysus Record Empire]

Novelty music is music that, in this post-modern world of ours, has become increasingly popular.   Hipsters wear kitsch and novelty as a badge of pride, which is one reason why Napoleon Dynamite was so bizarre.  It was hard to take Napoleon seriously, because for a lot of the movie, just by looking at him, it would be hard to tell him apart from any regular indie rockers.  Not that there is anything wrong with that; its just weird.

Dionysus Records is a record company unusually given to putting out novelty records.  Euro-beat, grrl rock, and surf music as well as the odd 70s band that claims to be a key link in the creation of punk rock they all seem to be at the heart of the Dionysus Records catalogue.  It is no surprise then that the next stone in this kitsch pyramid should be an all girl rock compilation called We Aint Housewife Material.  This collection is a mishmash of LA style bitch-rock (Betty Blowtorch, Blaire Bitch Project), some silly Japanese go-go gadget girl bands, and some other weird shit that doesnt really fit in anywhere.

Ive got to be honest that I dont completely understand what the point of this record is and why anyone would want to listen to it.  It is not that most of the record is bad (it is sometimes horrible, but mostly the bands do a pretty good job); it is rather that the only reason that these bands have for existing together on this comp is because they are fronted by women, or is it womyn?  If you like novelty music, and you like screeching L7-ish punk rock, youll like this album; otherwise stick to the Euro-beat record under the coach.
