HÜSKER DÜ Husker Du formed in Minneapolis, MN in 1979 where Bob Mould, Grant Hart and Greg Norton, met at a record store. They all shared a passion for hardcore punk rock and decided to form band and called themselves Husker Du (after a 50s Swedish board game, translating to do you remember?). Husker Dus early music concentrated upon rage and frustration, imitating the tone of prevalent hardcore bands such as Black Flag. They soon began to mix layered pop melodies and hooks with their hardcore punk roots. Local music fans immediately embraced their punk-pop hybrid sound, comprising memorable melodies, intelligent lyrics and simple pop structures. By 1980 the band had cultivated a strong following. They released their debut album, Land Speed Record, in 1982 and begun touring the United States tirelessly. They were the first of the mid-80s independent post-punk bands to sign with a major label, Warner Bros in 1985. They worked incessantly, producing 8 full-length albums in a 7-year period, all of which were warmly received by reviewers and fans alike. In 1986 Hart was rumored to be struggling with alcohol and drug problems, but the band still managed to complete their final album, Warehouse: Songs and Stories, released in 1987. They disbanded in early 1988. Hart recovered from his addiction and formed a new band, Nova Mob. Mould embarked upon a solo career and Norton gave up music altogether.
