The Id: The Septapus EP
Every once in a while, we get to review the best albums that no one has ever heard of, save for a few lucky folks. One of those albums is a six-track EP from the Id, a four-piece from Richmond, VA. Their influences are the Fall and the Birthday Party, and I can say without reservation that this does actually sound like the Birthday Party playing on a CD player with vocals that sound like they're being uttered from twenty-five yards away while a Fall 45 is being played on 33. Yeah, its that good. The first track, "By Default," is an instant no-wave ditty that shocks as its dissonant sound makes you re-think what you thought your tastes could be. I do not have the luxury of listening to a certain record or band everyday, because then I would not be able to take in the right doses of amazing music. It's just funny that this is an EP from some unknown band, yet it has stayed in my carousel for 3 weeks and I'm not sick of it yet. I just wish the vocals were more decipherable, especially on "By Default" and the closing track, "Eye for an Eye (for an Eye)". But this band is nothing short of a miracle. Check these kids out if you live in Richmond or Williamsburg or wherever these demons come from and decide to play their music. If you don't, not only will you be stuck listening to Modest Mouse for the rest of your meaningless life, but you will also have the distinction of being in the same category of people who claim to have been "down" in San Fransisco in the early and mid 1990's, but who ironically enough never saw the VSS, Clikatat Ikatowi or Heroin. Those people are now fans of The Locust. You see the example, do not follow their lead. Instead, listen to the Id, but make sure it's the Id from Virginia and not the Id from the mid 1970's who only put out one record.
