Bill: Breaking the Ground Loop
Back in 2002, we reviewed a little EP by this band Imaginary Bill, and our reviewer picked the title track Special as an intriguing song. Now is our chance to review the full-length release Breaking the Ground Loop. Hold your breath! Now keep holding it. Count to 100. Keep holding it. Ive heard that autoerotic asphyxiation can do wonders for a mediocre album. Not to sound harsh, but Im just not feeling this one much, which could be my problem more than it is Imaginary Bills. Let me try to explain. Theyve got a bit of a catchy pop-punk sound you know, the kind of music that isnt remotely like punk music at all, but somehow is used to describe bands that use pop music to discuss serious issues by using nasal vocals and lyrical clichs. Well, at least Imaginary Bill cant be accused of lyrical clichs here. My teeth have grown so long, they roll down into my neck to kill me is not a bad poetic image, but is poppy rock the right way to frame such imagery? Im confused here. Track nine Hollow starts off with some catchy enough guitar, but I just feel a growing disconnect with the singer as the album goes on. It kind of reminds me of, ofThats it! Incubus! The enormously, successful band from California whose lead singer has tough-looking tattoos despite the fact that John Mayer could probably beat him up in a boxing ring. Imaginary Bill is right on with this style of rock; poppy musical melodies and a singer who is very good at sharing his pain with the masses, I would assume. It just so happens that I hate Incubus, but Im obviously in the minority here, and if theres anything I believe as a music fan its to like what you like, not what some stupid critic or record company wants you to like. So there you have it. Imaginary Bill and I were just not meant to be. But theres someone out there in the world for everyone they say, so if you dig Incubus check these guys out. Otherwise, Ill save you a piece of rope.
