The Invertebrates: Garagezilla [Spineless]

Remember in the 1980's and 90's when you would read reports of Elvis Presley sightings? Well, welcome to the new millennium where we have Frank Zappa sightings. Yes, now that he has been dead for about ten years, we are in the age of imitators.  The Invertebrates come from San Francisco, CA and will most likely never leave the place considering the fact that most people outside of that city don't want to hippy-dance to prog-funk-pseudo-George Thoroughgood songs like "Drunk." It's hard to find a high point on this album with lulls such as "Can't See Your Way" and "A Sunny Day," the latter of which is actually a jazzy tune with some warbled vocals, bringing me to my next critique of the album: the guy sings with a voice that makes you wonder why he would try to imitate both Morrissey and Zappa on some song that sounds like it should be performed by the Steve Kimock Band.  "Exit 56" and "Color" are two more breaths of dead air reminiscent of tumbleweeds on the highway.  If booty-shakin music with forced vocals is your thing, you should check out "Jurgen's Lotion," track nine on Garagezilla. It sounds like a duet with Carol King and Chef from South Park. If you stumble across this album at a record store and think that you will be part of the cool, new Swedish garage rock mafia because of the title, you better think twice. I don't think that any amount of floppy teenager haircuts and tight pants could save you (even if you had a hipster hot topic studded belt with a skull buckle) from the torture that will ensue after listening to this album.
