Ist: Freudian Corduroy
[self-released]

So this band has kind of an odd name, Ist.  That's not a real word I don't think, but at least it's an easy band name to remember.  Like their name, their album Freudian Corduroy is probably a bit different than most you've come across.  The band is from Leicester England, but there are no strong accents here, and I certainly wouldn't throw Ist into the category of typical British Rock, because they're really doing their own thing here, even if it is a bit quirky in spots.

Quirky?  Just check out the horns on the song "Similarly Inclined."  It sounds like something Brian Setzer would write.  Ok, now forget about that comparison, because nothing else sounds even remotely like that.  The most noticeable track is probably "Boyfriend," because of its belting refrain of "I hate your f***ing boyfriend" that really is hard to miss.  Obviously the lyricist was upset when he wrote this song, but wow, it would take an equally angry listener to really get into this song 100%.  After this track, you'd think that Ist should be playing the next WHFStival along with Limp Bizkit, Staind, and maybe that new metal band with that girl singing that makes me so glad that the cassette player in my car still work.

But wait!  I told you this band was quirky, so before you write them off, I should mention that their instrumentation is pretty killer.  They definitely excel at using the acoustic guitar to create a tense atmosphere.  The mood of the albums closer, "Moments of Release," reminds me a little of Metallica's "Fade to Black," sans the metal breakdown at the end.  Many of their songs are just tight acoustic rock tracks that have some nice harmonies.  The lyrics to several of the songs are interesting: "I'm too tired to fight it, too tired to even sit down and write about it" goes the chorus to "This Is Where We Came In.  Then the band breaks into a spoken word chant.

Overall, quirks aside, Ist has some dangerous talent in them, even if it seems a little loosely directed on Freudian Corduroy.  The songs have a lot of up-front emotion and a bit of pontification, and the band is obviously trying to create something new and powerful with their music.  I imagine that some of these songs are the type to grow on you, and it's always nice to hear a band with an original sound.  If you're tired of the same old same old in rock'n'roll, give Freudian Corduroy a listen.
