The Jammin' James Garage Band: Freedom Calling

The Jammin' James Garage Band is a northern-California based band that specializes in, yep, you guessed it: Jammin'.  While most professional musicians shy away from the word "Jam" in order to avoid the stigma attached to the neo-hippy vibe, these rockers want to let everyone know their intention right there in the band name.  They have slow bluesy melodies with some deep and heavy political lyrics interwoven in most of their songs.  I thought it was Jammin' James Carter making a comeback when I received the disc in the mail but unfortunately it was just another jam band.

These cats are great musicians, but I wouldn't exactly rush out to buy the album.  I suspect that living in Boulder, Colorado is a good way for me to get sick of bands of this genre, so while this album might not be for me, its definitely possible that they would be a fun band to see in a bar or small venue.  Just don't expect to see these guys on Conan O'Brien or Craig Kilborn anytime soon.

If you live in the Bay Area, I would recommend sticking around if these guys came onstage at one of your local hippy bars.  Too slow even for the love-child genre, this band sounds like Widespread Panic slowing down from the Autobahn to a speed bump in a School Zone.  They're talented, but the sound is somewhat dated, resembling something we could have heard thirty-five years ago and possibly liked then.  Of course, there is always room for retro-love in the world of music, so if you are at the Mountain Air Festival and these guys start playing, I wouldn't necessarily rush away to try to find a kind veggie burrito. I would stick with them for about a half hour because most jam bands need at least that much improvisation time to impress audiences.

Overall, their album doesn't make much of an impact the first time around.  I'm sure the magic lies in the live experience
