Jason Liebman and the Uprising:
Escape from the Heart of Darkness
[For the Artist]

Escape from the Heart of Darkness is only four songs, and despite its lack of memorable tunes, it still manages to make an impression.  Its not every day you get to hear a Steve Perry-Ed Kowalczyk hybrid, which is a loose way of saying Jason Liebman has some boss pipes.

His outfit, the Uprising, are capable players, and its apparent they are a confident young band. Though its tempting to admire their sound, which is as full-bodied and nuanced as one could hope for, theres nothing here thats as engaging as their own She Says, an impressive song that wouldve sat nicely on the first Live record (right next to Tired of Me) big, thumping backbeat, swelling melody, an impassioned frontman, guitars equal parts grinding and watery.  Thats not to say a song like Hated doesnt have its merits, but its aimless, like the rest of the material.

Still, this is a good band, one that may only be a few hooks away from something special.  That sounds shallow, I know, but not all hooks have to be as obvious as Oops, I Did It Again.  Theyre still looking for a spark.  Whatever they do on She Says is a good place to start.
