The Jena
Campaign: Self-Titled
This one took a little warming up to; on initial listen, the Jena Campaign was not winning me over. The somber acoustic tracks that open the album seem to drag on and feel a bit redundant. But as stated, that was on my first listen. By the second, third, and fourth listen I started getting sucked into the album. On the fifth spin, I realized I was digging what I was hearing. Its that component of listening to music that makes being a music fan a lively hobby. Much the way Wilcos A Ghost is Born took time for me to absorb, the Jena Campaign is slow to digest but satisfies in the end. The music has similarities to the aforementioned band, as well as with Radiohead. A bit of folk, a little noise, a touch of rock and a dash of art; these ingredients together make the collective sound that the Jena Campaign produce on their debut album. The songs If You Sing It, Sing It Softly and Cut the Cord, Pt.1, I felt were standouts amongst the rest. The first was a Sonic Youth-esqe feedback/noise rocker that felt like an outtake from the Nirvana box set. The vocal performance reflected the tonality of Thom Yorke, and its the loudest track on the album. Maybe thats why it stuck out. Cut the Cord, Pt.1 is a more upbeat number. From the opening One, Two, and your know what to do the slide guitar riff, and hopeful lyrics, it proved itself as a song easy to get stuck in your head. So, you have to put some time into this one to fully appreciate whats going on. The reward is there if you can hold on, but patience is a virtue that most of us dont possess. Try to practice some here; youll like the end result.
