Jenny Choi:
Postcard Stories
Jenny Choi makes her mark as an impassioned songstress and musician on her solo effort Postcard Stories, and yet at the same time, one is left to wonder who will find this album appealing other than those in need of a testosterone detox, (which is in fact the name of a local radio show that spotlights female-fronted bands and nothing else). While Choi's lyrics do not come across as the manifesto of a Womens Studies major, her self-conscious words cast a sad shadow of abuse over the haunting music she makes with her cello and keyboards. The thing about her lyrics is that they're indecipherable in terms of their meaning, but that is only because her own life experience has given her the inspiration to write these verses that she knows very few will ever completely understand. So, aside for her audience of the select few, a great many people would enjoy her earnest lyrics and profound musicianship; but really, her greatest assets are her vocal chords. Her voice is whispy at times, though she can also maintain the textural, sucrose-laden crooning that effortlessly seeps into your ears. One of the truly, most enjoyable tracks is "Prometheus," and Choi does a marvelous job of updating the classic tale of this mythological tragedy. Her regret of missed opportunities and lost chances at happiness penetrate the listener. The song does, however, bear a resemblence to certain tracks from Portishead's Dummy. In the end, this album doesn't fail to mystify, as Choi's voice is nothing short of enchanting. Anyone who is looking for an introduction to Choi will not be disappointed in obtaining this release.
