THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN

"For us to have been the biggest band in the world in 1985 would have completely changed the face of the music business. For the better" Jim Reid, 1992

This highly influential British band was formed by brothers Jim and William Reid in Scotland in 1983. The brothers grew up listening to the Sex Pistols, Beach Boys and Velvet Underground. They were joined by drummer Bobby Gillespie and bassist Douglas Hart, and in 1984 released their first single, "Upside Down", on the newly formed Creation Records.  It was a spectacular debut and its success surpassed expectations. They signed with Warner Bros. subsidiary Blanco y Negro, and in 1985 released their debut album Psychocandy. The album was warmly received and widely praised by critics. The Reid brothers were the only permanent members with the other supporting musicians coming and going. The band's second album, Darklands, reached number 5 in the UK charts and was prefaced by their biggest hit, April Skies. The band continued to produce original and provocative music with its spooning feedback and fuzzy guitars over classic-sounding pop-rock melodies and riffs. Unfortunately the band never truly reached the great heights of success it deserved. In September 1998, the band members had a falling out on stage in Los Angeles; the band continued their US and Japanese tour without William, but it wasn't until October 1999 that they announced their disbandment. William now records under the names Lazycame, Ravesncraeg, William and CNYK. Jim along with another ex-JAMC member Ben Lurie formed Freeheat.
