The Kallikak
Family: May 23rd 2007
Yes, it is ambient. Yes, it is an electronic composition using found-sound recordings and a-harmonic drones. Yes, it was recorded by a bearded, ex-Microphones bassist, folkster Portlandite. But, no, you don't quite have this album pegged. Reaching beyond the sum of its parts, The Kallikak Family combines these typical elements to create surprisingly soulful and accessible sound-collages that are as pleasing as they are, at times, impenetrable. May 23rd 2007 can be hard to get a grip on as a whole – it dances between genres, sound sources and moods so quickly that it can, emotionally, leave the listener behind. But the brevity of the sonic ideas also prevents one from becoming bored or lost in a particular phrase, and by the album's conclusion, its rapid ups and downs have become one of the compositions’ most memorable elements.
