Kanda: It's a Good Name
for You
Few of the releases Ive heard this year are as fun to listen to as Kandas debut full-length, Its a Good Name for You. The electronic bleeps and fuzzy synthesized drums of opening track In C are accompanied by Arland Nicewaters (boy) and Akina Kawauchis (girl) harmonizing vocals (sung in C, of course); this sets the stage for the adorably twee synth-pop that populates the rest of the album. The duo creates a sound that manages to hold its own they make original electronic music that, while drawing on the obvious influences of the 80s, manages to sound original and undated. The most apparent influence here is that of New Order, where on tracks such as Charlie Green, the fluid electronic bass beats give the songs an almost soothing feel. Still, Kanda proves itself to be somewhat adept at branching out instrumentally, finding creative and appropriate uses for toy xylophone, violin, guitar, and cello within the scope of its synth-pop. But dont think this music is too cute to move to. Songs like V.P.L. and Bryan + Ryan could hold their own easily on the dance floor. Other songs experiment with different genres: Landlord has an East Asian feel to it, and Turtle, my favorite track of the album, is even more retro than the 80s: its 60s-influenced pop with the duos unique electronic element thrown in the mix. On Turtle, Arland sings, Cause Im a turtle, but Im not a slow-mover, and Akina responds And Im a rabbit, you know Ill get there sooner. Sound a tad bit cheesy? Maybe, but if you hear the song for yourself, youll be so blissfully emerged in Kandas infectious pop that you will find yourself singing along anyway.
