Kasino: Thank You and Goodnight EP
[Keep]

A follow-up to the bands debut, Thank You and Goodnight should most likely receive a second printing beyond its limited edition run of 50 (and maybe then, the songs wouldnt be cut off before theyre actually over), as the band has crafted some provocative melodies despite stunted production and some less-than-impressive playing.  Then again, maybe they should save up their money for a guy like Trevor Horn.

Theres a difference between not having a lot money and not having a lot of skill, and perhaps this band suffers a little from both. Despite this, Kasinos potential is still eminent on songs like Thank You and Goodnight, calling to mind Erasure on a sunny version of U2's Acrobat, but with a sound thats unmistakably Achtung Baby-lite.  Walk through Walls is an equally affecting number and a gorgeous ballad to boot, despite lines like Everyones so cynical.  And there are some wonderful moments sprinkled throughout, like the beautiful middle-eight on Kodachrome or the incessant backbeat of Sunshine.  But this is a band in desperate need of a producer.  That they sound like the musical equivalent of a lump of clay is perhaps why listening to this EP is so frustrating, but youd have to think a producer would be chomping at the bit to work with them.  These are songs that want to soar and yet seem to be settling for mediocrity.  Lets hope Thank You and Goodnight falls into the right hands.
