Katy Pfaffl: Self-Titled

Although Katy Pfaffl is billed as an acoustic folk-rock artist, her musical style is more eclectic than such a label would indicate.  Pfaffls recent self-titled debut album contains many components of jazz and rock, accented by African and Peruvian drum styles as well as other touches from her musical past.   She broadens the musical experience of her listeners, but not necessarily when they are ready for it.

This album contains many interesting songs that expose Pfaffls musical playfulness and expertise, ranging from the traditional to the exotic.  In My Favorite Place she shows off her beautifully rich and well-trained voice to an energetic beat that is easy to like.  In Mountains, she starts us off calmly with almost Copeland-like imagery, and then catapults us into an introduction to Peruvian drums where the sound grows spicy. This song has generous heapings of rhythms personal to the composers taste, yet they are not always easy on the listener. Pfaffl returns us to a jazzy rock style in the likable So Far Away.  Any jazz enthusiast can appreciate the improvisation and embellishments of her melodious voice. Sea of Change is aptly named, with lyrics that range from lofty to pensive and similarly impassioned music.

In short, this singer-songwriter is extremely gifted with an amazing voice.  Pfaffls only fault on this album is that she seems to put 10-lbs of talent into a 5-lb CD.  At times, she seems unnecessarily compelled to overfill our senses, which creates a few songs that are somewhat unfocused with a smorgasbord of styles. I would expect future efforts from this talented singer-songwriter to have the same zealousness, enveloped in a more tamed, cohesive demonstration of her vocal diversity.
