Kilgore Trout:
Novocaine EP
I love mid-to-late-90s teen movies. Like Shes All That or Boys and Girls. The great thing about being an 80s baby is that Im old enough to remember the previous pack of teen trash, courtesy of the Brat Pack, but I also witnessed the renascence of youth culture a decade later. I love 90s movies because of the power of nostalgia; they are a one-sided glimpse into the world of my late teens the slang, the outfits and the music. Kilgore Trouts Novocaine EP is three missing songs from your favorite soundtrack of one-hit wonders. Technically, there is nothing wrong with these songs. They are solid, enjoyable rock with good bass, strong vocals, and harmony. Kilgores style is classic of the era, with slightly grunge vocal effects over radio-ready pop rock. Their lead guitarist is female, which in the accompanying press sounds like pandering to fans of the rock-chick. But she also plays a good guitar. Beautiful seems perfectly suited to the scene where the pretty freshman walks up the steps to her new hipster high school. I Make You Mine would come later when she starts the snagging process of the unsung romantic hero. Closing out the trio, the title track, Novocaine, was built for the reconciliation kiss and closing credits. Kilgore Trouts songs actually made me visualize these scenes. Obviously. Much as you might nostalgically enjoy a nineties teen romantic comedy, the Kilgore Trout EP can be a similar lighthearted pleasure. They missed the soundtrack-as-pathway-to-stardom heyday, so include Kilgore Trout on a compilation disc of your nineties favorites. They will feel right at home, and you can enjoy them like its 1995.
