Kill the
Hippies: Erectospective
Two discs – 77 songs pulled from 7”s, cassette comp releases, and unreleased scratch – Erectospective indeed. The core of Kill the Hippies was born back in the early 90s by one PP Envy and another Morte Treehorn. Through the years, KTH has seen a revolving door of drummers and even a keyboardist on about a fourth of the tracks. The sound is simply that of boredom and too much energy. Combine that with the youthful spirit of early 80s hardcore and punk, and you’ve got yourself a fun, ADD-driven band. KTH holds you with enthusiasm and charge, but keeps you interested enough to sit through the 77 tracks with their tongue-n-cheek lyrics and attitude. The name came to Morte (Matt) while trying to think of the “most cliché punk rock band name possible.” I personally think he hit pretty damn close, myself. With some of the songs sung by Morte and some by PP Envy (Melissa), the collection strays from getting too old and generic-hardcore sounding, which can be very important when dealing with so many tracks and such short songs. I say kudos and well played, as the recordings remain unique and interesting. The first disc compiles the band’s 7”s released over the years with a few comp tracks tossed on toward the end, ranging from ’93 to the last 7” released in ’04. The second disc throws together some unreleased tracks which just border on the strange along with a few cassette releases from ’93-’95. These recordings are all raw and loose, as they obviously should be, but the charge and energy thrown out by these punks is grand. Definitely worth the listen…and a few more.
