The Kings of Nuthin: Fight Songs
Play Fight Songs after a few beers and tell me you dont feel like breaking shit. This second release from the Boston-based outfit grabs you by the lapels and doesnt let go until a bluesy fourth track slows things down...for only a few minutes. Call it psychobillycall it what you willbut its the sound a thousand beer-soaked fraternity basements have been looking for. Imagine ska, accelerated. Imagine Jerry Lee Lewis, accelerated. Yes, imagine rockabilly, accelerated. Stand still at one of their shows and I bet youd look like an ass. I dont know whats fasterLiam at the drums, Zack hammering the piano, or Spike slapping the bass so hard and fast youd think it wouldnt survive a single gig. With full horns blaring, Torrs throaty, screaming vocals, and a washboard somewhere back there, too, Fight Songs kicks off with a pace and mood usually reserved for a big finale. Drive All Night, All Ive Lost, 11 to 3, and Fight Song for Fuck-Ups showcase the bands undeniable skill at keeping a tireless, breakneck pace. I havent seen these guys play live, but Im confident one would be compelled to smash a few car windows on his way home after the show. You can blame these songs. There are a couple of bluesy, 1950s inspired, slower numbers, plus a rockin instrumentalLa Chupacabrawhich reminds me of the old spaghetti westerns. Im sure these tunes werent exactly designed to give a live audience a breather, but it would make sense. The Kings of Nuthin enjoy labeling themselves as misfits, fuck-ups, and hoodlums, but with talent like this, theyre definitely the Kings of Sumthin. What a modest bunch of fuck-ups!
