Kite Operations: Dandelion Day
[K.O.A.]

Dandelion Day starts off strong with a rocking little tune called A Wonder, and it kind of makes you curious for what is next to come.  Kite Operations sound is pretty hard to classify.  The opening track is a little noisy, and some heavy indie rock riffs are certainly present.  Another strong song Effervescence follows with a quiet little beginning.  Halfway through this track, the electric guitar shoots into the song as a noisy addition to the slow vocals.  I guess the most interesting thing about the band is this sort of contrast between the poppy slow indie rock which has the bare basics of The Decembrists or The Shins on one hand, and on the other hand, the spastic noisy guitar of which Im quite fond.

Come to think of it, this band reminds me a lot of Hum.  Remember them?  They had a good knack for pop sense, but a playful spirit while drowning you in a little bit of noise.  Kite Operations is playing a similar game, and they do a pretty fine job of it.  The drummer keeps you guessing too, as he keeps the rhythm but offers a number of touches when you dont quite expect them.  Occasionally the vocals get a little emotive, but not in a way too distant from Hum, and this works fine for the band.  Im not really sure where Kite Operations might go from here, but Dandelion Day is an enjoyable start.
