The Kite-Eating Tree: Method: Fail, Repeat...
[Suburban Home]

With an album name like Method: Fail, Repeat, The Kite-Eating Tree was hopefully setting me up for a none-too-funny joke at the end of this review.

Sadly, only my bad jokes will continue to fail and repeat.

As a reviewer, its easy (and therefore a waste of time and space) to make comparisons of one band to another. But for me, its the only way to translate the faster, harder rocking sound of The Kite-Eating Tree. At times bordering on epic, other times simple and triumphant, transitions into anger, chock full of quick-change soft-to-hard power chords, whispers into screams. This is a rock album, reminiscent of my college years when all the indie kids blared No-Knife and Braid up and down the hallways.

Perhaps not the most inspired or original album of its sort, the Kite-Eating Tree knows their genre, and they love it. They know exactly when to kick in with a good off-tempo lyrical line in sync with the otherwise four-four signatures.

When it comes down to it, this album reminded me that I still have a bit of angsty college-aged anger left inside me. And since Im not actively following Jawbox anymore, The Kite-Eating Tree was a nice break from my otherwise electronica-heavy playlists. The Kite-Eating Tree is for those of you just past Emo, not quite ready for the upbeat indie rockers.

I will be keeping this CD in my pile, right next to No-Knife. Because lets be honest: sometimes when youre pissed, all you wanna do is completely rock. Let the Kite-Eating Tree take you there.
