Knife in the
Water: Cut the Cord
Cut the Cord is an intriguing new release from Knife in the Water that seems to mix a bit of folk-pop with some subtle country western-stylings and an interesting songwriter named Aaron Blount. I guess you could call his writing style sort of dark and psychedelic when you hear lines like "Mother moth cocoon becomes a bloody mess, lights between the trees drinking antifreeze." But don't imagine the music here sounding anything like Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. The music and the acoustic guitar pervading this album are very soothing and occasionally eerie in songs like "Village Fireworks" and "Threads of Carbon in Watercolor." I really like their sound, and they pull off a great vocal duo when Laura Krause sings backup vocals. The vocal melodies are very much in the style of a less sleepy Mojave 3 or The Mendoza Line. The only peculiar thing is the way the frequently dark lyrics are vocalized in such a perky fashion on songs like "Kill a Tiger." You can write that off as a distinction Knife in the Water may have, but it does take a bit of getting used to. In general, this album is very easy to listen to. A few of the songs sound awesome, and the somewhat odder tracks usually have enough organ or pedal steel to keep me happy. Definitely a band to look out for if you dig that laid back western-indie sound as much as I do.
