Kowtow Popof:
Kowtow Drops the Pop Off
Drops the Pop Off is an eight-track EP made up of songs from two forthcoming discs from this Maryland-based singer-songwriter. Made up of both instrumental tracks as well as regular songs, this disc runs the gamut of styles from bouncy pop to introspective mood-rock. My favorite track is actually the opener, Run to Daylight, which is a happy summer song if ever there was one. Throughout the EP, Kowtow Popof mixes drum loops, samples, and keyboards with acoustic instruments, and while this is an increasingly common trend in music, it works here. Im not a huge fan of Popofs voice, so the instrumental tracks are the ones that shine for me on this release. A lot of instrumental music in rock often turns out to be this is a song I didnt have lyrics for and ends up being repetitive and boring, but thats not the case here. Run to Daylight is light and fun, and Theme from Lucky Guy is spooky and prog-rocky. Oddly enough, even though I dont really like his voice, I really like most of the lyrics on this CD. The songs are strong, and the recording is clear and professional. Hes been playing music for over ten years, and this album shows that he knows exactly what sounds he wants to hear. Theres enough experimentation throughout the album that the songs dont get boring, so they hold up after repeated listenings. This sampler disc does exactly what its supposed to: whet your appetite for Kowtow Popofs upcoming releases. Im definitely interested in hearing Exhalted Headband (Unauthorized Soundtrack) when it drops in 2004.
