Lakota: Acquaintances EP
[Pop Up]

It will come as no surprise when listening to Lakotas Acquaintances that one will think of bands like Taking Back Sunday and Alkaline Trio. The band is not only influenced by those bands, but they hired some of the same production team to help in completing its first EP.

But this New York band is not pigeon holed only in that sound; I could hear other influences like the Foo Fighters and Social Distortion, particularly on the track Shouldnt Have To - from the well crafted intro, to the main riff, and into the strong catchy chorus. Strong lyrics such as I feel that jealously and anguishes has left you hating me compliment the choruses musical build up. The formula is very similar to the newest Foo single, and lord knows that formula can sell albums.

All in all, this five-song EP is a good listen, but it leaves me a little unsure. I definitely could have used a few more tracks to develop a solid opinion about Lakota. There are three straight ahead rockers that sound like the bands influences, the aforementioned song, and Standing By, which opens with a nice guitar riff and the line, Bring yourself to a hotel in the middle of nowhere, before building an intense double-timed chorus, allowing drummer Jimmy Herbst to pound away. Herbsts drumming throughout the EP is excellent.

The EPs production stands out in my mind as the one piece that doesnt work. There are too many backing vocal tracks, and I would have loved to have heard bigger drums, but thats getting technical. Acquaintances is good, but I hope to hear their first full length, so my brain isnt stuck where the EP left me hanging.
