The Layaways: We've Been Lost
[Mystery Farm]

Just listen to the title track of the new Layaways LP Weve Been Lost, and you can tell why theyve been getting some positive reviews lately.  The band started out as a one-man project, but has developed into a three-piece band.  What works on this release is David Harrells quiet and unassuming lyrics and the bands variable use of synthesizer to sugar-coat the mellow rock sound of the album.  I emphasize the word mellow to point out the bands similarity to a synth-rock band like Grandaddy, as opposed to bands that sound like The Killers or The Bravery.

One oddity that is new since their debut release More Than Happy is that a new band member now takes on vocal duties for a few tracks.  These tracks are okay, but they sound a bit out of place in the context of The Layaways signature-sound, which I quite liked on their debut.  Still this addition gives a bit of variability to the release, and Nothing Left to Burn is certainly a welcome addition to the LP, no matter who is responsible for writing and singing it.

This LP is worth investigating primarily for its soft, dreamy pop songs like Every Time We Try.  What a wonderful track!  The song drifts along on its synthesizer bass before getting a little boost at the end with a fuzzy guitar thrown on top of the mix.  It is odd how a small handful of these tracks have a more traditional roots rock sort of feel to them, and Ill make no mystery of the Layaways song-style that I prefer.  Developing more of their breezy synth-tracks like Silence, Every Time We Try, and Contagious is the best way to keep me nice and happy as a Layaways fan.
