Layton: Grand Design
[Left-Wing/Lunatics]

Laytons addictive debut, Grand Design, is thirty minutes of sonic boom.  Its the kind of music that allows you to believe you are floating around this world on a cloud in some sort of drug-induced state maybe with robots. Im not really sure, but I am thinking that would work out well floating clouds with robots and a dance party with this album as the soundtrack.  Robots can be cool.

Layton is another brother and sister duo, made up of mastermind Paul Layton and vocalist Lara Layton.  Thankfully it doesnt stop there and become clich. Welcome is the addition of two other members, Michael and Jason, to balance out the group.  Layton is described as a pop band from the future past and the patron saints of new romantic soundscapes.  I know they are pretty out there, but if the future, or what sounds a lot like the past, is where they need to be to make their moody, decadent, synth-pop sounds, so be it.  Im in.

This album glides along at a comfortable pace and sounds good throughout.  However, the standout, the big single, the hot track, has got to be Hopes All There Is.  It is everything a great 80s new wave dance song needs to be:  hot female vocals, a beat that the kids (as well as myself) can dance to, and oozing with sex which I think youll agree is paramount in a dance song.  Other standouts include Morning Glory and the tremendous C-June.  Its tremendous, because this song is so old-school Bowie that it is uncanny.  They also have a song called Confessions of a Lush, which, though a good song, I loved simply for the title.

The information I have seems to point towards some touring this year to support the September release, but their website only mentions a gig in San Diego.  I fully intend to catch them if they ever make it to my area and would recommend you do the same.
