Le Tigre: This Island
[Strummer/Universal]

Well, its 2005, and Manhattanites Le Tigre are making their major label debut on Universal/Motown with This Island. What should we expect from them now? In a few words the same old stuff. And I dont mean that in a pejorative sense. I have to hand it to these ladies; when it comes to making politically aware, super dance-a-licious electro-pop-punk, consistency is the key, and Le Tigre has it.

The album starts with the action-packed On the Verge and works its way through anti-Bush rants, feminist espionage, love and facing life as a politically aware person amidst the oppression of patriarchy, and people who just dont get it. The overall sound is slicker and more produced than previous Le Tigre releases, but the energy is more palpable than ever. The bleep-bloop beats are constantly morphing and becoming more intricate, yet accessible, throughout this album. There are hooks and ferocious energy abound. The lyrics retain their lo-fi charm and continue to dish out healthy does of pertinent honesty about the state of the current political regime, as well as the politics of personal relationships that pervade life universally. Other stand-out tracks include This Island, Tell You Now, TKO, After Dark and an uber-sassy cover of Im So Excited.

I wont pretend that there arent a few slow moments on the album (Nanny Nanny Boo Boo, New Kicks, and Sixteen). Nevertheless, Im willing to ignore those not-so-hot moments by recognizing their place in Le Tigres agenda. Overall, the album is full of immensely strong songs full of that trademark Kathleen Hanna vocal sass. So, be not afraid of This Island if fighting patriarchy isnt your top priority; if you like high energy, intelligent music and getting your dance on, Le Tigre just might be your ladies.
