I didnt want to do it. I listened to the album over and over again. I read way too many magazines and see bands so often being compared to other bands, and I think how this must bother the newer band and agitate their originality. With that said, I apologize in advance, but hell, Leaves sounds an awful lot like Coldplay and maybe a bit o Richard Ashcroft. They have also garnered such high praise as being named the New Radiohead by NME, which I wouldnt agree with. Yes, quite a bit to swallow. The boys in Leaves are Icelands latest contribution to the current music scene. Being holed up in your house for the better part of the day with only a couple of hours of sun could drive anyone batty. The members of Leaves, Arnar Gudjonsson (vocals & guitar) Hallur Hallson (bass) and Arnar Olafsson (guitar & accordion) have honed their dark thoughts and ideas into one well-crafted record. Of course it would have been more of jolt to the senses if it had come before those other guys, but it didnt. So therefore it isnt revolutionary, and it cannot even be considered great. It is, however, pretty good. Perhaps these guys deserve more than that, but I am pretty sure you would be hard pressed to find someone who actually thought that they were better than Radiohead. Leaves makes melodic songs, and their album has great production value. I suppose this would make them more radio-friendly or more mainstream if the mainstream hadnt become an all-encompassing term. The only song that is really boss is Epitaph. It is a warm, comfortable song that has a really good back beat. I will most certainly add it to a future mix CD. Maybe Leaves could do something like wear tutus on stage then they would be the band that sounds likes Coldplay except they are silly and have an accordion player.
