Lemonface: Freshly Squeezed
[Rock the Sour]

Wow.  What was I doing when I was 14?  Ive blocked out most of it, but I think I spent much of my time sitting on my ass and watching cartoons.  I certainly didnt have the productivity drive that fuels these three kids from D.C.  While they live in different towns and attend different high schools, all three share the blessing of being raised by professional musicians.  This, in addition to practicing since before they aged into the double-digits, has apparently endowed them with an early-blooming sense of musical wit.

Before I heard this album, it had been described to me as power-pop-punk.  I feel that this description is somewhat misleading.  True, the album is characterized by the type of noise common to indie bands writing with top-40 guidelines in the back of their mind.  However, while Dana Wilentzs vocals are far from monotonous, her voice has just enough of an edge to keep the music raw.  Of course their limited life experience is reflected in the lyrics of songs about ADD, fights with friends, and such.  Regardless, the album is not without signs of songwriting maturity, such as on Missunderestimated, in which they take a stab at political consciousness.  While the music on Freshly Squeezed may not be revolutionary by any stretch of the imagination, these cats have years to decide which direction they want it to take.  Hell, theyve gotten this far without a drivers license.  Im really looking forward to seeing where theyll be in five years.
