 Leslie Berry: No Cinderella

You have to give Leslie Berry copious credit for being an extremely proficient musician. Its so refreshing to hear a musician relying on expertise.  Leslie plays without hesitation or any need to hide flaws in her musicianship, because there are no apparent flaws.  She seems to pour herself out onto the keyboard and into your head as her fingers dance along knowing just where to land.  She clearly states her musical presence with a unique flair.

The thematic nature of No Cinderella was intriguing and quite charming.  She ranks above the many artists who are unwilling or unable to compose in this way. Though the articulation of the story becomes less important as the music takes over, Berry has plenty to say and pursues her ideas throughout the album.  The effect ends up neither unlikable nor overdone.

With the keyboard as the primary focus, there was some need for additional thickening of the musics texture.  The horns on Power to Move Me were a good choice for giving the song a fuller sound.  However, in some places, the instrumentation seemed to go a bit flat.  Willpower used only drums to enhance the melody, and though the tune was still enjoyable, the sound was not as full as it could have been.  Berry has many bright and danceable tunes on this album, and I can understand why her live performances get rave reviews. Backup vocals added by her sister-in-law were also a nice touch.

With her inventive and original keyboard styling, theres no doubt Berry will continue to accomplish the musical endeavors she strives towards.  Though she gets the basics from her classical training, she clearly writes in a creative style of her very own.  Whatever influence her husband/former teacher has had musical or marketing it works for the betterment of this album.  Her attempt to enrapture the listener emerges attractively packaged with the Cinderella motif.
