Light Sleeper: Self-Titled
[self-released]

The nine tracks on this CD just flew by.  This three-piece band (Yvonne Ng on vocals, Steve Coghill on bass, and Richard Cranch on guitar/vocals) has put together a quiet, indie-rock release that is easy to listen to over and over again.  While most of the songs feature Cranch and Ng singing together (only Wheres My Happy Ending, arguably the weakest track on the disc, features Ng singing solo), the sound of their voices never gets old.  My favorite track is number two, Pop Song, which opens with the line Everything I know about love/I learned from a pop song, and basically makes the album for me.  The songs are soft and simple, and they bleed into one another.  Cranchs guitar playing is very reminiscent of early R.E.M. and the numerous bands that influenced Peter Bucks playing to begin with.  The vocals sound purposely tentative, and the human aspect of the playing and singing completely hides the fact that all of the songs feature a drum machine instead of acoustic drums.

The record sounds great; especially considering it was recorded entirely on a four-track and doesnt seem to have been mastered.  This gives the songs an understated feel, accentuating their good points and drawing attention away from the rough spots.  My only quibble is that the songs do sound similar, and you can lose track if youre not paying attention.

Light Sleeper is a fine debut release, and Im excited to hear what the band will come up with next.
