THE LIGHTNING SEEDS

This British band hailing from Liverpool (home of The Beatles) was formed back in 1989 by notable music producer Ian Broudie. He had first appeared on the music scene in the late 70s as part of the short-lived punk group Big In Japan. In the years to follow, Broudie dabbled in a variety of musical projects. The Lightning Seeds were created as a solo project when Broudie turned to writing songs, and were essentially a one-man band backed by luminaries and session players. After the single pure became an international hit, their debut album Cloudcuckooland was released in 1990. Poppy melodies intertwined with simple affectionate lyrics ensured a successful debut. Despite the record's success, Broudie returned to production, helming albums for groups like the Primitives and Sleeper. In 1991 Broudie returned his focus to the Lightning Seeds and made Simon Rogers (formerly of the Fall) a full musical partner. Virgin signed them in 1992 and the album Sense was released; with poor sales they were dropped. They were subsequently signed by Epic on the condition that Broudie concentrated full time on the Lightning Seeds. For Jollification, a touring band was formed comprising a keyboardist, bassist and drummer. Touring all over the UK and Europe, along with festival appearances and successful single's releases helped Jollification reach over 600,000 sales. The Lightning Seeds now had a taste of the success they quite rightly deserved.
Dizzy Heights was released in 1996 and this was the year they were to have their most successful hit to date Three Lions the England football anthem for the European Championships which was written by two popular British comedians. It scored a number 1 hit and truly launched the Lightning Seeds into the UK spotlight. A compilation album was released in 1997 and made the top 5 in the UK charts. Tilt was released in 1999 and a UK tour was undertaken as part of the promotion. Since then there have been numerous rumours regarding the band splitting up. These rumours have all proven to be false but Broudie has now confirmed that the Lightning Seeds will be taking a lengthy break.
