Lily: Running from the Sky
The first thing one notices about this CD is the cutesy, anime-style cartoon drawing of Lily, complete with fairy wings and acoustic guitar. The other artwork in the insert includes Lily playing guitar on a distant planet, and Lily as a mermaid. These images certainly capture the mood of the album: fanciful and imaginative, yet immature and boring (and just a tad cheesy). The album plays out like a T.H. White novel, complete with kings, castles, and dragons. When I think of Lily, I imagine the girl in Labyrinth, only instead of hanging out with Muppets and being upstaged by David Bowie's package, Lily writes songs. The first track opens the CD well. The production is exquisite (I am willing to bet Lily's parents paid a lot for this CD), and Lily's voice is very pretty. The only problem is that all of the songs thereafter sound almost exactly the same. If this album were a baked good, its recipe would be: 2 cups of medieval sounding guitar, a pinch of piano, and 2 teaspoonfuls of pretty voice (seasoned with lyrics inspired from "Legend"). Mix 'em all together, and bake for 40 minutes and 40 seconds at 200 degrees. Add violins, bongos, and didgeridoo to taste, and serve. The only part of the CD I absolutely cannot stand is the end of the last track that features recordings of laughter, in-studio conversation (which were probably staged), and someone singing Elvis Presley. This comes out of nowhere, and ends the CD on a very strange and slightly creepy note. Overall, this is not a bad album. Keeping in mind that Lily is probably between 14 and 17, I would say it is actually a pretty good effort. If Lily were to quit playing Dungeons and Dragons, and grow up a little, she could really put her talent to good use, and come out with something very beautiful.
