 The Lizards: Self-Titled

Have you heard the Tenacious D record?  Jack Black and Kyle Glass offer up an album of rawk songs, full of demons and wenches, promising to rock your socks off.  And while you know that they are totally into it, you also realize that theyre taking the piss out of the metal genre, with their tongues planted fully in their cheeks.  This CD by the Lizards is exactly like that, except for the fact that Im pretty sure theyre not joking.

Throughout the nine tracks on this disc, the Lizards present basic heavy metal, with tight instrumentation and decent vocals.  The band obviously knows how to play their instruments and put songs together, but unfortunately the record sounds kind of flat.  The vocals are mixed high above the music, making the vocals sound separated from the rest of the song, and the guitar, bass, drums, and harmonica are super clean, making the songs sound sterile and lifeless.  Metal records should always have some grit to them, but this sounds a little too tame to me.

But, overall, the Lizards have put together some decent songs, and the playing throughout is polished and together.  Some of the lyrics are on the cheesy side, and one of the songs (Savor the Flavor) is a total chore to sit through, but if youre a fan the genre (heavy metal with an emphasis on blues), this album might be for you.  You can check it out, and get a list of upcoming shows, at their website: lizardswebsite.com.
