Lonesome Jack: Drunker Than Thou EP
[self-released]

Drunker Than Thou is organized chaos that manages to sound pretty darn good.  With six members and over twice as many instruments among them, the band packs a pretty good punch.

The album starts off with a fast-paced, melodica-based tune, Leah, with fuzzed-out male vocals.  After the initial What on earth is this? reaction, one cant help but be pulled into the infectious, Irish-infused, bar rock even if you cant tell what the singer is actually singing about.

Following the Irish trend even further, 4 Years in the Navy follows with clearly Irish-inspired vocals and the addition of a playful flute to the hopping drums.  The upbeat feel of the song is enough to pull anyone off his bar stool to look silly trying to dance a jig in the middle of the floor.

Next the group pulls out a sax and a banjo with melodic flute additions for Hegemony.  This song packs in some distortion like the first track, but it is less constant and the vocals are more understandable.  Its fun.

The last track on this album, Truth, which talks about God being a woman, is the slowest of the bunch with a guitar and banjo pulling most of the weight and a saxophone throwing in a few notes here and there.  The vocals are a male and female singing in tandem for the majority of the time.  The first half of the song is more melodic, whereas the last half starts to fall apart and run in different directions.  It wasnt a train wreck nor was it extremely successful, but either way, it wasnt really the best note to end on.

All in all, this album is definitely interesting, and the group has some talent to be watched.  At times, it seems they try too hard to be different, and I hope they stay true to the sound that they have developed.  Lonesome Jack has created music that is undoubtedly interesting, lively and party-ready.  So grab a bottle, get up off your feet, and dance like a drunken fool.
