Lookwell: Unhurried (EP)
[Eskimo Kiss]

Lookwell is a 3-piece band on Wilmington, NCs Eskimo Kiss Records.  This EP, Unhurried, is their second release (the first with Eskimo Kiss).  The title seems to be factual, as it took the band over a year to record these tracks.  Sure, more than a year for only five songs doesnt appear to be very productive, but this EP effectively demonstrates that patience pays off.

Produced by the band and Jerry Kee (hes worked with Superchunk and The Connells), these songs are flawless.  The music is guitar based, but theres some keyboards and piano in there to spice things up on occasion.  Imagine the guy from Luna singing songs by the Moody Blues.  Thats what this guy sounds like.  In fact the overall atmosphere of this EP takes me back to the golden days of college radio, back when R.E.M. was still on the verge of mainstream acceptance.  But rather than nostalgic, this CD sounds timeless undoubtedly the result of the care that went into the production of these tracks.

I tried to make sense of what exactly these songs were about, but the lyrics are snapshots, rather than unbroken narratives.  You get pieces of the puzzle and are left to draw your own conclusions, which is fine by me.

This EP has left me thirsty to hear more from Lookwell.  However, if it took them over a year to bang out these five songs, the probability of seeing a full-length album in the immediate future doesnt look too good.  Come on guys, prove me wrong.
