MMFAN316: Dot
Matrix with Pop Music
More like the music that you might play Tetris to than dance to, this debut release shows that D.I.Y. can be still be done. With the help of their GameBoy sound-loop editor, Nanoloop 1.2, this motley crew of Japanese avant-hipsters electrifies at times and terrifies at others. Because they don't take themselves to be serious musicians, MMFAN316 can actually enjoy themselves while they kick back and make the kind of music one believes can only be made at Space Camp. The fun-loving opening track, appropriately titled "Welcome," is a goodhearted introduction to the albums blips and bloops, while the fourth track, "Sunday Morning" could be justly compared to a leisurely stroll down to the farmer's market on any given lazy weekend. You can just imagine Mario or Luigi (from Nintendo fame) strutting along a two-dimensional plane just to capture the flag at the end of the level. It's been a while since most people have played video games as care-free and harmless as Super Mario Bros or ExciteBike, so the fact that this album sounds like the music from these games is a welcome change from the hordes of new-school, indie, lo-fi bands. It's not that those bands don't have as much to offer, because obviously they do in terms of providing a richer substance in the music that they put out; but MMFan316 doesn't go about the indie scene pretending as if they've invented anything new. They respect the power of the Nanoloop and they respect its shortcomings. There's a sense of humility, and that's refreshing in itself. If there were one way to sum this album up, it's Boards of Canada without the IDM association. This music is smart and quirky, and it's something that can be traced all the way back to Pierre Shaeffer, through Jean Jauques Perry and up until Stereolab. This album is a necessity if you are trying to escape what hipster rags (like Left Off The Dial, just kidding worship us!!!) tell you to enjoy.
