Manda and  the Marbles: Angels with Dirty Faces
[Sickhouse/Addison]

Within seconds of hearing the sophomore album by Manda and the Marbles, Angels with Dirty Faces, I found myself falling hard for the power pop/punk girl, and her entourage.  The Columbus, Ohio quartet has released a high energy, spirited album that will easily bring a smile to your face.  With a four-year break between releases, its obvious with this second album that the band is working towards something great.  Manda is a little feisty, a little sexy, and completely adorable.  Straight out of the era of Blondie and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Angels with Dirty Faces will make a solid addition to any music collection.

The entire album is thick with peppy power chords, lively rhythms, and Mandas rocker vocals. The keyboards fill everything out and bring an indispensable depth to their hyper pop/punk sound.  Themes include everything from relationships, fallen dreams, and sometimes just having fun.  But regardless of the theme, theres nothing about the delivery that wont brighten your day.  The bulk of the album can be understood in tracks like Simple Things and Take it Out on Me.  Dominating power chords are soon accompanied by Mandas hypnotic vocals and grinding guitar riffs that will keep you entranced.  Another stand-out track, Seventeen, is a rare ballad for Angels with Dirty Faces.  And, its a pleasant surprise to see the band ease into the melancholy style and prove the breadth of its talents.

Reminiscent of 80s female fronted bands, this group adds a little twist with a solid hint of tough-girl sex appeal.  There is hope that this band will continue to move forward and progress towards a truly remarkable sound.  If this album is any indication, theyre definitely on their way.  Now, for all you out there with a hankering for the good old days of 80s girl-punk, this is the band for you.  And theres little to say about it that cant be covered with the statement, Manda rocks!
