The Marauders: Midnight Rhythm
[Rock N Roll Purgatory]

I'll be the first to admit my rockabilly knowledge extends no further than the background music at a little place called Skylark Lounge the handful of times I needed to avoid the hipster scene at an indie rock bar across the street.  So the Marauders' Midnight Rhythm might not have been something I normally would pick up for myself but like my few experiences the Skylark, it didn't take long for the Buddy Holly nostalgia to grow on me.

The Marauders formed four years ago in the unlikely mountain town of Altoona, Pennsylvania. Fortunately, small towns seem to be the best places to acquire the tales of a rough-and-tumble lifestyle that, apparently, make a rockabilly album great.  Midnight Rhythm makes me want to believe that the permanently depressed Altoona is the kind of place that hasn't changed much since the genre was born.

"My Revolver" is undoubtedly the band's masterpiece, featuring lyrics about wanting to skip town after robbing a liquor store.  I couldn't help thinking it would make the perfect lament for that bad-ass 19-year-old rebel in a studded leather jacket, the kind of guy who hangs out in high school parking lots.  Singer and guitarist Ben Dumm apparently agrees.  "...You can get pretty desperate sometimes," he said.

But the Marauders aren't all 1950's nostalgia the band just prefers it.  "Kill Pop Radio" reveals a disdain for modern music, with lyrics like "I'm gonna put a fist in my MTV... Can't save my soul with a remote control."  Even if you're not ready to give up your iPod or cable television just yet, listening to Midnight Rhythm is a nice way to escape the present or at least whoever happens to be playing at the indie rock bar across the street.
