The Marlboro
Chorus: Youth Medium
The Marlboro Chorus pleases me. My most straightforward description is to tell you that Youth Medium is simply sunny day music. My first impression was the Brady Bunch meets The Darkness with the occasional splash of pirate rock for good measure. An eclectic collection? Yes. But, The Marlboro Chorus pulls it off with a well-composed album that will brighten your spirits and have you singing along. There is a familiarity to the sound, conjuring memories of rollicking summer days. The Marlboro Chorus falls within the vein of The Shins or the Kinks, but this talented band has slightly more sardonic messages wrapped up in their catchy, upbeat melodies. Youth Medium is predominantly an acoustic collection of lovely, polished songs that are dominated by the themes of politics and life in America. But the somber tone of the lyrics is offset by a catchy chorus or a strong hook that is evident in each and every track. The album is so well composed that Im left with an inability to give you an opinion as to which song is the best. Similar lyrical themes turn up throughout the album. Both Dark America and Dont Sweat the Fallout are centered on politically-charged lyrics, although one relies on a repetitive bass line and intense background melodies while the other delivers a toe-tapping cheery sound against poignant words. Another dominant sound may be found in Your Lovers Ghosts and The Black Iron Prisoner. These are both stripped down ballads of acoustic guitar and harmonic vocals. The Marlboro Chorus is a clever indie pop band, delivering a wide variety of sounds. In the short time that Ive had it, Ive grown quite attached to this album. For those of you looking for a new musical experience, you should check them out.
