Matches FC: Self-Titled EP
[Fire]

Matches F.C. are yet another New York band.  My thoughts are immediately tainted with all of the over-hyped bands that have come before these boys.  I know its not fair, but it is realistic.  Why is it necessary to attach such a qualifier to bands from a certain locale? Oh, they are a New York band, so they must be kick-ass.  Thinking along such lines means overlooking the fact that there are hundred of bands in New York who you will never hear about because they are suck-tastic, and I lean more towards that group when calling Matches F.C. a NY band.

Their self-titled 4-song EP is filled with a blandness that borders on exhaustion.  The press release reads More than a token tribute act, Matches F.C. revisits rock conventions in an attempt to destroy them.  They do? I hear no destroying on this record.  Instead, I hear sing-songy guitar with the occasional oooh-ing.  I hear everything that is typical in bands these days and it doesnt wow me.  They even admit to being newcomers to the bustling New York/Williamsburg rock scene  Since the band chooses to admit the obvious, I will just say that this statement is exactly why they sound the way they do recycled.

The songs cover the life of a single guy singing to or about a gal he wants to shag or has shagged and about whether or not hell be playing hard to get or begging to turn him on on the track Hot Sugar.  Hot Sugar is apparently the bands only calling card, since it is mentioned several times throughout their press release.

I have no idea what these guys have to say, but I sure hope they are having a blast saying it because there does not seem to be anything about them that will keep them around when the New York rock label has died away.
