Mike Ferraro: Lovers Only Love EP
[No Work]

Buying new music is only permissible after the three song test with which most people are familiar, I dare say. If the only decent track by a new artist is the first one to reach the radio, then one can just buy the single: one gets the catchy tune but is not burdened with an entire album of listening displeasure. Or, if youre an obsessive fan, singles hold the promise of rare tracks and live performances. But what can one do when the single itself promises nothing no catch, no rare B-side - nothing?

Lovers Only Love is a three song EP from Mike Ferraro from Seattle, of whom this reviewer could learn very little. Ferraros voice is unremarkable, unfortunately. It lacks nothing in quality but fails to hold attention. The music is post-everything coffee shop emo, with simple vocals and acoustic guitar touched up by a Casio and some reserved drum programming.

There is nothing striking about these three songs, hanging in the balance between radio filler and forgettable background noise on airline TV. The title track is the most pop-oriented of the record, and the following two songs are melancholy versions of the first. Having listened to them in succession a dozen times, I still find it impossible to recall any of the lyrics. This is always a bad sign for a single.

Your single should be your strongest work even if it is your only strong work and Mike Ferraros EP does nothing to showcase his ability as a performer.
