Mische Eddins:
Vertebrae No. 5 (EP)
Mische Eddins has been described as producing folk electronica with a dark and dreamy edge. On her latest EP, Vertebrae No. 5, this is only partially true. Eddins does have a peculiar style that could be deemed folk electronica. Her acoustic guitar pairs nicely with swooning electronic noises as she gives her best impression of Tracey Thorn. However, Ms. Eddins does not qualify as really dark or dreamy in any of the five songs presented on the new EP. Desperately obsessive, boring break-up songstress is more like it. Each and every song on this release (including the hollow and self-indulgent remix of the first track that appears at the end of the EP) is fraught with shallow and bittersweet observations about break-ups. The thematic material on this EP is not the only thing thats direly static: the music itself is as well. Unfortunately, Eddins is unable to provide the kind of dynamic changes it takes to draw listeners in and hold their attention. None of the songs break her own self-cast mold with any explosiveness or extreme delicacy. Any beauty that Eddins voice provides is obscured by the bland repetition of worn-out themes and droning music. But look on the bright side: at least its not a full length album.
