Mon Electric Bijou: Songs Made from Plastic
[Matchbox]

If theres anything I hate more than wordplays on a bands name, its press kits that contain a promotional quote more enthusiastic than Joel Silver promoting the new Matrix sequels. According to breathless reviewer (or promoter) Doug Kline, Mon Electric Bijous lead man, emerging from the depths of a Montreal suburbgasps for air with his feverish and raw debut album[which]delivers a fresh sounds that is filled withsome of the most interesting lyrics and emotive vocals ever heard. With press like that, youd better deliver. Unfortunately, Songs Made of Plastic sounds like a bad early 90s grunge band combined with a high school creative writing class. Filled with repetitive beats and unmemorable melodies, MEB occasionally tries to change things up by inserting small, overproduced sections that contrast heavily with the main sections. Far from sounding interesting or fresh, it ends up as a mess. A few songs show a modicum of promise, but they are covered up by discordant harmonies, and other vague attempts at sounding different. I would completely write off MEB, but according to the aforementioned Mr. Kline, MEB is single-handedly securing the future of Montreals underground scene. So if you are worried about Montreals underground scene, pick up this album. Everyone else, avoid it.
