Mother: State Your Intention
[Roaming Gnome]

State Your Intention is the debut release from the Seattle-based band, Mother.  Over the course of thirteen songs, the three-piece runs the gamut between your college alterna-rock and your bombastic alterna-rock.

All of the major touchstones are here there are nods to R.E.M. and U2, and quite a few songs seem highly influenced by the music (not so much the lyrics) of the Cure especially the first track Patience Ignites The Cherry Blossoms.  Tim Macauleys vocals are strong and come across well on the recording.  While his vocals are a little on the plain side, they do seem to fit the songs.  The guitars, by Jon Grout, are clean throughout the disc and he doesnt overdo the effects.  The overall sound of the record is clean but thin, and the lack of crunch can at times make the disc sound under-produced.  Of course, this is a common trait of many indie recordings and does not necessarily mean this is the sound the band was going for.  The packaging is pretty boring and could definitely benefit from a better design.  There is only one picture of the band, and the rest of the insert features only text theres not even any cover art.

Since Mother comes from a city that has had such a presence in the music industry for so long, its nice that they dont sound like you would expect a Seattle band to sound.  Instead of copping a grunge vibe, theyve embraced the original alternative bands that influenced that sound in the first place.  While there is definite room for improvement, I think the band will continue to write strong songs and eventually find their place in the industry.
