Mummydogs: Self-Titled
When I first listened to this CD, I was not impressed the first track, Dark Green Car, had a great garage-rock opening, but the introduction of Guy Kysers vocals completely turned me off. So, I stopped the disc and decided to listen to it later. Now, having listened to it a few more times, my opinion is completely different - Mummydogs have made a really great album. On further listen, I realized how much Lou Reed that Kyser has in his singing style, and remembered that can never be a bad thing. Once Johanna Kyser chimed in, their close-but-slightly-off harmonies turned the songs into much more than your basic garage rock fare. You know how some peoples voices just fit together, and you cant imagine them not singing with each other? Its like that. I dont know if the Kysers are brother and sister or husband and wife, but their sound works. Guy also plays guitar, and theres just enough flash to show you that he knows what hes doing theres no wanking here. Cary Rodda and Paul Takushi handle the bass and drums, respectively, and while theres nothing really spectacular about their parts, they serve the songs well, and thats whats important. The songs are really good theres a Lou Reed/Velvets influence, as mentioned above, but there are also hints of Sonic Youth and the Pixies. Look at the People, a cover of a Skip James song, has that Tom Waits shuffle going, and I could easily hear Waits singing along. Actually, this record reminds me of all the great alternative music from years ago, before alternative meant Heres some bands that sound like Creed... and now here are some more bands that sound like Nickelback. All in all, Mummydogs have made a very good disc the songs are well-written and the production is solid. Im not sure if this is their first album or not, but I look forward to whatever Mummydogs may come up with in the future.
