Munkster: Help Me Breathe (single)
[Toast]

Yes, Munkster is a British band, and yes, they play pop music, but I would be hesitant to classify them with the catchall term Britpop.  They lack the angst and emotional melodrama normally associated with bands of that genre, such as Travis or Coldplay.  Instead, they simply play beautiful, straightforward melodies, harmonize their butts off, and rock out when the proper situation arises.

Help Me Breathe, the first track, starts off with an elegant, clean guitar hook and some relaxed, pleasant vocals by lead singer/guitarist Seb Wesson.  When the first chorus drops, drummer Kris Anwar adds some great harmony vocals reminiscent of classic pop bands.  Halfway through the song, the obligatory The Bends-era Radiohead influence pops up as a wall of guitar distortion crashes in, rendering the chorus harmonies more powerful and insistent.  Okay, tons of bands use that clean/distorted Radiohead trick these days, but come on, its such a successful effect because it rocks.  And Munkster takes this influence and blends it with their own approach to produce an original, unique result.

80s Aryan Lover is an upbeat, dynamic romp that starts with a ska guitar line and intricate work from the rhythm section very reminiscent of the Police.  There is a great quick segue to a loud, dark chorus, and again the song builds in intensity to a pleasing, powerful climax.

Finally, If You Want Me In is a typical B-side a simple, unadorned acoustic track that is a decent song but not the big hit.

Help Me Breathe is a three-song single containing tracks from their as-yet-to-be-released first full-length album.  It is a good appetizer containing two great songs and one pretty good song, but it is hard to truly decide whether a band is good after listening to only three songs.  Color me pleasantly intrigued and eagerly anticipatory of more.
