 My Blue Pill: Self-Titled EP

My Blue Pills self-titled EP has five songs:  three live, one studio, and one acoustic (which confuses me, because despite the fact that its acoustic, it ought to fit into one of the other two categories, shouldnt it?).  Theyre from Virginia.

What struck me first about this EP was how much better the live songs sounded in comparison to the studio songs.  They sound so good that I almost dont believe that theyre actual live performances.  Full stereo panned drums/complete instrument isolation/etc.  If these songs really are live, whoever recorded them sure did a fine job, not to mention the fact that the performances are flawless.

My Blue Pill sounds like a band who really, really, really likes the Deftones, but doesnt rock as hard.  I also get a little bit of a Smashing Pumpkins vibe.  The music is dense and well-written.  The lyrics are good, except for a few lines that make me cringe every time I hear them.  The vocals are either hit or miss.  Overall, I like this guys delivery, but he keeps singing parts in a really high voice (hmmm...  just like the Deftones...) that isnt really in his vocal range.  Sounds a little forced sometimes.  He also has a tendency to sound overly emotional (fake) on occasion.

I like all of these songs, with the exception of that damn acoustic song, Once In A While, which sounds like a song that the Pumpkins would have thrown away for a good reason.  Otherwise, all of this material is really strong.  My favorite is While You Were Watching.

As a special treat for all the geeks out there, this EP is also a slick enhanced CD, containing video clips of the band in concert.   This, combined with what Ive already told you about their live songs, leads me to strongly recommend you check out My Blue Pill live.  It's likely that where this band really shines is on stage.
