Yuma House: Future Perfect
These days, there are an abundance of bands writing one or two catchy pop songs for the purpose of scoring radio hits, but few are capable of writing a whole CD full of them. Yuma House is the exception. Pop music is in its heyday, and it's good to know that there are bands doing it themselves, doing it well, and doing it with their own style, no less. This DC area band is not only talented at writing catchy pop songs, but they are also talented when it comes to making sure their music gets heard. By using the Internet's ubiquity to spread their music and widen their fan-base, Yuma House also scored a record label in Garageband.com's new label Garage Band Records, which is helping the band distribute the EP online. Future Perfect starts off with the ultra-catchy single (Write Off) Summer. The chorus is so catchy that you almost don't notice how insightful the rest of the song's lyrics are, one thing that seems to set Yuma House apart from some other pop acts with absolutely meaningless lyrics. Red Car is an equally catchy track, and singer Don Brasek's voice dips elegantly into falsetto, evoking comparisons to singers like Matthew Sweet. But the EP is more impressive in the later tracks, as Yuma House shows its talents a bit more. The real value of this EP is in Yuma's ability to allow the vocals to take a back seat and rely on the lead guitar and sometimes even the bass for contributing to the melody, something many pop artists are afraid, or not talented enough, to try. This technique is most readily seen in the last three tracks--Ezmirelda, Sick In Bed, and Smiles. The enchanting Smiles also displays Yuma House's ability to match its poetic lyrics with suitable melodies. Yuma House should have just the formula to get its music heard: a disc full of catchy songs that would appeal to both pop and alternative audiences, a unique approach to writing pop music, and seemingly business-savvy band members. The combination is almost perfect.
