 A New Dawn Fades/ (Schwa)ray: Split Single

Last weekend, I was being my usual hipster socialite self, hanging out at the local rock and roll club to watch the almighty Times Ten unleash the fucking fury.  I knew that they were opening for some band called A New Dawn Fades, so I was expecting a goth/emo hybrid or something equally dismal, but instead I got my ass served to me by this Richmond/Lynchburg guitar and drums duo.  Equal parts metal and, oh, I dont know, surf rock, ANDF plays instrumental songs that balance over-the-top riffing with a stripped-down sound. Other reference points are a Frank-Blackless Pixies or a much less embarrassing Man or Astroman?.  For their song on this single, it sounds like they added bass, more guitar parts, and who knows what else, which makes them sound slightly more traditional.  Although I prefer the sonic minimalism of their live set, they still go nuts on this recording, maintaining the energy of the ANDF concert experience.  The other song is by (Schwa)ray, but unfortunately their music is not as inventive as their name.  The instrumentation is fun (heavy guitars and drums) but the vocals are boring-ass screaming and shouting.  They should take notes from watching ANDF and drop the singer.  Words are redundant nowadays cuz I just wanna rock, and I dont give a fuck about your feelings on the current political climate in the US of A.  Oh sorry, I forgot I was a mature adult for a second what were you saying?  Yeah, so you get two loud songs on a cute little 3-inch CD for a dollar.  You should probably buy this.
